KC109

KC109 - Erie Railroad Postwar AAR Box Cars

The Erie was one of the first to order box cars with the improved Dreadnaught end.  They took delivery of 500 cars (82000-82499) from American Car & Foundry in late 1945.  They received an additional 700 cars (82500-83199) from AC&F the following year.  Both groups were essentially the same with the only differences being in the types of hand brakes and running boards used.  One distinguishing characteristic of these cars was their use of the pre-war style of Youngstown door.  Another unusual trait was the inside height of 10'4" which necessitated an “abbreviated,” shorter top rib on the ends.  Both groups of cars were equipped with the Universal Rotary Type brake adjuster.  The first group was delivered with the small yellow diamond with black background.  The 1946 delivery had a small white diamond with black background.  In both groups the roof, ends, and underframe were coated with black car cement.

The Speedwitch conversions for these cars include a basic Branchline undecorated kit, resin castings of the ends, doors, and details, etched metal running boards, plus other details in wire and styrene, and decals. Please note that the kits include Ajax hand brakes which are appropriate for cars 82000-82099 and 82500-82899. Equipco hand wheels and housings are available from Detail Associates (part no. 6401) and beautiful Equipco hand wheels are available from Kadee. Universal hand wheels and housings are available from Intermountain in their ART refrigerator car kit and these sprues may be ordered separately directly from Intermountain.
