K121.1 - Erie 70000-series Steel Rebuilt Box Cars

Between 1934 and 1936, the Erie Railroad rebuilt approximately 2,300 existing box and auto cars into steel box cars by welding plate steel directly to the existing structural members on the sides of the cars and riveting sheet steel to the structural members on the ends of the cars. Two groups of cars were essentially identical: the 70000-70999 series rebuilt from box cars (orig. built in 1923-1924) and the 71000-71567 series rebuilt from auto cars (also orig. built in 1923-1924.) These are the subject of this kit.

The cars were used on the Erie into the 1950s when they were sold. Some were acquired by West India Fruit and Steamship, the Chicago & Illinois Midland, and Akron, Canton & Youngstown. Some of the cars retained by the Erie served in MOW service while others were scrapped.

These kits include one-piece cast resin bodies, resin, styrene, and metal details and accurate decals, including the small black & gold, small black & white, and large black & white diamond emblems. Trucks and couplers not included. Accurate trucks are available from Tahoe Model Works.

A note about the price of this offering. Some may declare it to be a steep price. At this point, I am not operating Speedwitch as my primary means of survival, meaning that it takes time away from other things that are important to me, too. That time is valuable and it means more to me currently. In addition, I have always felt that I offer some of the best-researched kits available, with high detail, great one-piece castings, and unrivaled touches such as the best decals available and a large amount of both prototype and model photos in my instructions. I don't feel that I need to justify my efforts to myself, but others may question my motives. I realize I cannot please all and hope that everyone will understand.
