K115 - Norfolk & Western B-4/B-4A Box Cars
In 1940 and 1941, Greenville Car Company built 450 50' box cars for the Norfolk & Western Railway. The first and third groups, nos. 52300-52349 and 52400-52449, respectively, were assigned to class B-4. The second group, nos. 52350-52399, were assigned to class B-4A. These three groups of cars were built in 1940 and were generally identical save for the lack of end lining on the members of the B-4A class. All of them used an unusual flat, lap seam riveted roof, with recessed end panels to provide clearance for the latitudinal running boards. All cars used Morton Open Grip running boards and brake steps and had 4/5 Dreadnaught ends. Cars 52300-52399 used seven-rung side and six-rung end ladders while cars 52400-52449 had ten-rung side ladders and nine-rung end ladders.
In 1941, Greenville built an additional 200 cars, nos. 52450-52649, that were also assigned to class B-4. They were generally identical to the first three groups, but used the Murphy panel roof instead. This group used Apex Tri-Lok running boards and brake steps and had 5/5 Dreadnaught ends.
While these cars bore a passing resemblance to AAR automobile cars, they were, in fact, quite different, with deep fishbelly side sills and sides with fewer panels using u-section side posts rather than the zee-section side posts of the AAR design.
These models feature one-piece cast resin bodies, resin underframes and resin, styrene and wire details, an exhaustive etched metal detail parts set, car history, instructions, and decals. These kits were formerly marketed by Pocahontas Models as their kits nos. 105 and 110.
