K114 - Western Pacific and Kansas City Southern "Interim" AAR Box Cars
After the introduction of the 1932 ARA standard box car design, the inside dimensions of box cars began to evolve rather quickly. The Pennsylvania pushed the envelope with their X31 design and several roads followed by ordering larger box cars, too. Three roads ordered cars that were taller (and wider) than the 1932 ARA design, but shorter than the 1937 AAR design that would follow. These cars are interesting “hybrids.”
The Western Pacific received 200 of these cars from Mt. Vernon Car Manufacturing Co. They were placed in the 20001-20200 series. Their unusual trait was the use of Wine ladders.
The Kansas City Southern was another of the roads to receive these “interim” box cars. The cars of the KCS also used Wine ladders, plus a two-rung Wine ladder section at the left corner of the car side in place of hand holds.
Speedwitch is offering kits to replicate these interesting prototypes. The cars incorporate such details as etched Wine ladders on the WP and KCS models, accurate decals, one-piece cast resin bodies, and resin, styrene, and wire details. Kits do not include trucks, couplers.
